Layover in Chicago: what to do

The United States has no sterile transit: most arriving international passengers clear immigration and customs at the first US airport, and on many itineraries that means collecting checked bags, re-checking them for the onward flight, and going through security again. Whether your bags are checked through depends on the airline and the itinerary, so confirm at check-in. The process alone can take 60–120 minutes at O'Hare on a busy afternoon.

Add the round trip into the city and you need a real buffer. As a working rule: under 5 hours, stay at the airport; 6 hours is the floor for a downtown dash and you will spend much of it in transit; 8 hours or more, a short downtown walk and a meal are realistic; 12 hours or more, you can do a proper half-day. Domestic-to-domestic connections are faster because you stay airside.

Two airports serve the city. O'Hare (ORD) is the big international hub, 27 km northwest of the Loop. Midway (MDW) is smaller, closer in, and mostly domestic. Check which one your connection uses before planning anything.

The US has no transit-without-visa corridor. If you are not a US citizen or lawful permanent resident, you need an authorisation or visa to enter, even if you only change planes and never leave the terminal. There is no airside international transit at US airports.

Which document applies depends on your passport and your circumstances. Citizens of Visa Waiver Program countries normally use ESTA, applied for online before travel; it is not a visa and does not guarantee admission. Others generally need a visa, and for some itineraries a C-1 transit visa is the relevant category rather than a B1/B2 visitor visa. The simplest plan is to check bags through and carry only a small day bag. If you must store a bag, allow extra time to find the counter, and keep the receipt.

From O'Hare, the CTA Blue Line runs 24 hours to the Loop in about 45 minutes. From Midway, the Orange Line takes about 30 minutes. Both drop you within walking distance of the river, Millennium Park and the Magnificent Mile. Fares and taxi or ride-hailing costs change; check current CTA fares and your app before you commit. Taxis and ride-hailing take 30–60 minutes depending on traffic.

Build the return leg into your plan: be back at the airport 2 hours before an international departure and 90 minutes before a domestic one. The Blue Line runs all night, which makes a late return possible, but allow 60 minutes door to door if anything goes wrong.

Six hours is a downtown dash, and only if your arrival and departure times really give you that window. Take the Blue Line to Clark/Lake, walk the Riverwalk, see the Bean in Millennium Park, grab a deep-dish slice or an Italian beef, and head back. Do not attempt a museum.

Twelve hours buys a real half-day. Add the Art Institute of Chicago or the Field Museum, walk the Magnificent Mile, and have dinner downtown before returning. Twenty-four hours lets you add an evening in a neighbourhood such as Wicker Park or Lincoln Park, a second museum, and a morning at the lakefront.

If your layover is under 5 hours, stay at the airport. O'Hare has terminals connected by the Airport Transit System, and both airports have food and lounges, though seating fills up at peak times.
