CTA trains: the default

The Blue Line runs from O'Hare into the Loop and on to Forest Park, stopping in the West Loop, near the Loop and through Wicker Park and Logan Square. It is the line most visitors want. Trains run roughly around the clock, though late-night frequency drops to every 20–30 minutes (check).

The Orange Line runs from Midway to the Loop, with a stop at Roosevelt that connects to the Red Line. It does not run overnight; service roughly spans early morning to just after midnight (check).

Pay at the fare gates with a contactless bank card or phone, or buy a Ventra ticket from a machine. Fares are flat and transfers between CTA rail lines are free within a set window (check).

Taxi and ride-hailing

Taxis wait at marked ranks outside each terminal. Fares from O'Hare to the Loop are metered and typically land around US$40–60 before tip, more in heavy traffic. From Midway it is usually US$30–45. Tipping 15–20% is the norm, added in the app for ride-hailing.

Ride-hailing pickups are at designated zones, not at the kerb outside arrivals; follow the signs and the app instructions. At O'Hare this can mean a walk of several minutes with bags. Surge pricing hits hardest at rush hour and during big events.

If your hotel is in the suburbs or far from a rail line, a car is the sensible choice regardless of cost.

The rail option is by far the cheapest and the price does not change with traffic. A taxi or ride-hailing trip costs roughly eight to twelve times as much. For a family of four with luggage, the gap narrows but rail still wins unless you are staying away from the lines.

Parking at downtown hotels is expensive, often US$50–80 a night (check), which is a reason to skip a rental car for a city-only trip.

Practical tips

Allow 90 minutes to reach the airport before a domestic flight and longer for international departures, on top of the transfer time. The Blue Line is not affected by traffic, which makes it the safer bet for a tight connection.

Late at night, sit in a carriage with other passengers and keep bags close. The Blue Line runs overnight but stations are quieter after midnight.

If you are arriving on a long-haul flight, a taxi or ride-hailing car is easier with jet lag and heavy bags; the train is easy to use once you are rested.
