Central Tanzania is the country's dry plateau: the political capital Dodoma, the university and market town of Morogoro, the Kondoa rock-art area, and the southern parks of Ruaha, Mikumi and Udzungwa. It is not the classic northern safari circuit and it is not a beach. Come here if you want Ruaha's lions, Mikumi as a short add-on from Dar es Salaam, Udzungwa forest walks, or the rock art at Kondoa. Otherwise treat it as transit between Dar es Salaam and the west, and put your nights in the north or on Zanzibar.

Central plateau (Dodoma, Singida): Hot days, cool nights year-round because of the elevation; the dry months May–October are the comfortable window.
Morogoro and the southern parks: Wetter than Dodoma; Mikumi and Udzungwa are green and humid in the rains, dry and clearer from June.

The dry season (June–October) is the best time for wildlife and for gravel roads; the rains (December–April) are green and cheap but muddy.
