- Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
- Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
- Eastern Europe ↗Reach this subregion only from the EU side — Romania for Moldova — through crossings run by recognised authorities; no route through Ukraine, Belarus or Russia is planned here.
- Eastern Europe ↗Re-read your government's advice for Moldova (it covers Transnistria) in the week you travel; the situation next door changes fast.
- Eastern Europe ↗Carry euros in cash for Transnistria and village Moldova; cards stop working at the Dniester.
- Russia ↗Check your own government travel advice for Russia before any booking; advice depends on your passport and changes without notice.
- Russia ↗Direct flights from much of Europe and North America are suspended; no independent tourist route is documented here.
- Russia ↗Confirm that your travel insurance and medical evacuation cover apply to Russia before you rely on it.
Central Russia is the historic core around Moscow: about 2.5% of Russia's territory, roughly 20% of its population, and the country's main rail hub. Moscow is the arrival point and the sleep base. Direct trains from Moscow reach Vladimir (~1 h 45), Tula (~2 h), Kaluga (~2 h 15) and Yaroslavl (~3–4 h); Suzdal needs a bus from Vladimir, and the wider ring of oblast capitals sits further out. Sleep in Moscow for 3–5 nights and day-trip the near ones; add a night in Vladimir or Yaroslavl only if you want the early-morning version without a return train.

- Suburban trains can be crowded at commuter hours; buy a seat on long-distance trains where offered.
- Read your own government's travel advice for Russia before booking anything.
Day-trips door to door
| To | From | Door-to-door p50 | Last return | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vladimir | Moscow | 130 min | unknown | Frequent trains from Kursky station; check the last evening departure before you go. |
| Suzdal | Moscow | 210 min | unknown | Train to Vladimir, then bus; the bus back is the weak link — confirm the last one. |
| Tula | Moscow | 120 min | unknown | Kursky station; kremlin and samovar museum in one day. |
| Kaluga | Moscow | 135 min | unknown | Kievsky station; pair with the Tsiolkovsky space museum. |
| Yaroslavl | Moscow | 210 min | unknown | Overnight trains exist; a same-day return leaves little time — better with a night. |
Bags between cities
Left-luggage rooms at Moscow rail stations are the practical way to day-trip with a bag; hotel storage is usually free for guests.

- Continental: January is well below freezing with short daylight; July is warm. May–June and September are the comfortable windows. Check current averages before packing.
Winter is a real trip (Moscow in snow) but plan indoor blocks and check for ice; spring thaw makes the small towns muddy.
