The Central Highlands are the plateau behind the coast: pine hills and flower farms around Đà Lạt (1,500 m), coffee and pepper plantations around Buôn Ma Thuột, and the communal houses of the Bahnar, Jarai and Ede peoples further north. Distances are long and buses slow, so most visitors see only Đà Lạt, flying in or coming up from Nha Trang or Mũi Né. The wet season (May–October) turns afternoons to rain and waterfalls to torrents.

The Central Highlands are the plateau behind the coast: cool pine hills at Đà Lạt, red basalt soils of coffee and pepper around Buôn Ma Thuột, and forest homelands of peoples the French called Montagnards.
1Basalt and pine1 min
The highlands are a series of plateaus between 500 and 1,500 m, much of it on volcanic basalt that weathered into deep red soil. That soil is why Vietnam became the world's second-largest coffee producer, mostly robusta grown around Buôn Ma Thuột and Đắk Lắk.
The Lâm Viên plateau around Đà Lạt is higher and cooler, with pine forest and a mild climate that let the French build a hill station and farmers grow flowers, strawberries and vegetables for the whole country.
- Đà Lạt altitude
- About 1,500 m
- Coffee
- Mostly robusta; harvest Nov–Jan
2Highland peoples1 min
Ede, Jarai, Bahnar, M'nông, Sedang, K'ho and other groups have lived on the plateau for centuries, with longhouses, communal rông houses and gong music (UNESCO-listed as the Space of Gong Culture). Migration from the lowlands in the 20th century made the Kinh the majority in the towns.
Visiting villages is easiest with a local guide; ask before photographing people and ceremonies, and avoid elephant rides, which are poor welfare.

3A French hill station1 min
Đà Lạt was founded after the doctor Alexandre Yersin explored the plateau in 1893; the French built villas, a railway (the rack line from the coast, now closed except a short tourist section) and a sanatorium town for colonial officials escaping the lowland heat.
Emperor Bảo Đại kept a summer palace here. Today Đà Lạt is where Vietnamese couples honeymoon and families escape the heat, which shapes its tourism: flower gardens, themed cafés and night markets.

4War and roads1 min
The highlands were a strategic prize in both wars: the Hồ Chí Minh Trail ran along the western edge, and battles such as Ia Drang (1965) and Buôn Ma Thuột (1975) — the attack that began the final offensive — were fought here.
Roads are long and mountainous; most visitors fly into Đà Lạt or come up from Nha Trang or Mũi Né, and see the rest only on a second trip with a driver.

5Seasons1 min
The dry season runs from December to March, with clear days and cold nights in Đà Lạt. From May to October afternoons bring rain, waterfalls swell and mountain passes suffer landslides.
Domestic holidays — Tết, Christmas, 30 April — fill Đà Lạt; midweek in the dry season is the best time.
