  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Balkans ↗Mine-suspected land still exists in Bosnia and Herzegovina and in pockets of Croatia's former front line: outside towns keep to tarmac and waymarked paths, and treat red triangle signs and taped-off fields as absolute.
  • Balkans ↗Serbia refuses onward entry to travellers who reached Kosovo from a third country and then try to cross straight into Serbia; route Kosovo–Serbia legs through North Macedonia or Montenegro, or start the loop in Serbia.
  • Balkans ↗Hire cars need written permission from the rental company and valid insurance for every country on the line; Kosovo sells its own border insurance and some contracts exclude Albania, Kosovo or Bosnia outright.
  • Croatia ↗Croatia is in the EU and the Schengen area; the EU Entry/Exit System applies to non-EU visitors. Check the official EU and Croatian sources for your passport.
  • Croatia ↗Book car ferries and popular catamarans ahead in summer; foot passengers still need to be early for the busiest routes.
  • Croatia ↗Split and Dubrovnik fine visitors for walking shirtless or in swimwear away from beaches; carry a cover-up.

Central Croatia is the inland north around Zagreb: baroque towns, hill castles, spa towns and wooded hills, with no sea. It is the cheapest and quietest part of the country and the part most travellers skip. If you land in Zagreb and head straight for the coast, you have seen the region's airport and nothing else. Two nights in Zagreb plus one or two day-trips is the realistic shape; a car turns the small towns from awkward into easy.

4 nights
Zagreb 2 + Varaždin 1 + Krapinske Toplice 1, then on to Istria or the coast
  • Central Croatia has no coast and no island ferries; do not book it expecting beaches.
  • Small-town museums and castles often close on Mondays and shut by late afternoon — check before travelling out.
  • Regional buses to villages can be a few per day; a missed last bus means a taxi or an unplanned night.

Slightly cooler and wetter than Zagreb; hill roads can be icy in winter.

Unlike the coast, rain falls year-round here; July and August are the busiest and hottest, and Advent in Zagreb (late Nov–early Jan) is the region's peak for city visitors.
