Castro Valley
Skip as a base: it is a residential East Bay town with one BART stop. Use it for a half-day at Lake Chabot or a cheap bed near Oakland.
Castro Valley is an unincorporated town of about 61,000 people in the inner East Bay, governed by Alameda County rather than its own city hall. It has no downtown sightseeing core: the draw is Lake Chabot Regional Park, a BART station on the Dublin/Pleasanton line, and cheaper beds and parking than Oakland or San Francisco. Most travellers pass through or use it as a car-based base for the East Bay.

BART's Castro Valley station (Dublin/Pleasanton line) reaches Oakland and San Francisco; AC Transit route 32 loops between the Bay Fair, Castro Valley and Hayward BART stations. Rideshare is thin late at night.

Etiquette, safety and scams

- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics

Scams and watch-outs
- Summer afternoons regularly top 32 °C inland; carry water on lake trails.
- Trails at Lake Chabot close at dusk; check gate times before a late start.
- Castro Valley is unincorporated: some services and rules are Alameda County, not a city.
- BART stops running around midnight; last trains are early by big-city standards.
A low-crime residential town; the real risks are heat on exposed lake trails, dusk gate closures and thin late-night transport. Standard US city precautions apply.
