Castlemaine
Give Castlemaine one full day and one night by train from Melbourne: gold-rush streets, the old gaol lookout and a steam train to Maldon. Two nights if you want the Diggings park.
Castlemaine is a gold-rush town of about 7,500 people at the crossroads of the Midland and Pyrenees highways, 90 minutes by train from Melbourne on the Bendigo line. It is smaller and quieter than Bendigo or Ballarat, and most of what you came for sits within a 10-minute walk of the station: Victorian shopfronts, the Theatre Royal, the old gaol hill and the market building. The steam railway to Maldon runs from the same station on many Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Get around
The centre is walkable in 10–15 minutes end to end. Trains run at least hourly to Melbourne (about 90 min) and connect to Bendigo, Ballarat, Maryborough and Geelong. Taxis wait at the station and outside the large supermarket, and are normally booked by phone. A car helps for the Diggings park, Chewton and the wineries.

A small, low-crime country town; the real risks are bushfire and heat in summer, unmarked mine shafts off the walking tracks, and unpatrolled swimming holes.
