What each season is actually like
Spring is the strongest compromise. From late March the city is comfortable for walking between the Roman theatre, the Punic walls and the port, and the light lasts into the evening. Easter week is the one period to plan around: processions fill the centre and hotels in the region sell out, so book weeks ahead or pick a different week.
Summer is beach weather with a catch. Daytime temperatures on the Murcia coast commonly reach the low thirties and the humidity makes midday uncomfortable. Locals shift the day: swim early, eat late, stay indoors in the afternoon. Sea temperatures are at their best from July to September. If you are here mainly for the city rather than the beach, June and September give you the same sea with far less pressure on hotels and restaurants.
Autumn is the second good window. September and early October keep summer warmth while schools go back, so the seafront and the city centre thin out. From mid-October rain becomes more likely and the region can get short, intense storms; they usually pass within a day but can disrupt a beach plan.
Winter is mild and cheap. Daytime temperatures in the mid-teens are common and the sun still appears, which makes Cartagena a reasonable winter city break when northern Spain is wet and cold.
