CarlsbadCarlsbad, New Mexico

Stay 2 nights: one full day for Carlsbad Caverns, one for the town and Sitting Bull Falls. Skip it as a base if you are not going underground.

Carlsbad is a small oil-and-potash town in southeast New Mexico whose only real reason to exist on a travel map is Carlsbad Caverns National Park, 20-30 minutes southwest by car. The town itself has a walkable old centre, a small desert zoo and a handful of motels. Two nights covers the caves properly; one night is a rushed compromise. You need a car: there is no useful public transport to the park, and the nearest full-service airport is in El Paso, Texas, about 2.5 hours away.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is effectively mandatory. The park entrance is about 30 km (20 mi) southwest of town via US 62/180, then a further 11 km (7 mi) up the access road to the visitor centre. There is no shuttle from town. In town, drive or use ride-hailing, which is thin - check the app before you rely on it. Fuel up before the park road; services are sparse.

Carlsbad Caverns National Park

go

Door to door: About 40 min from downtown

Drive US 62/180 southwest, then the park access road

The reason you came. Allow 3-5 h for the Big Room loop and the natural entrance; the elevator saves the knees.

Sitting Bull Falls

go

Door to door: About 45 min

Drive SR 137 northwest from town

Picnic spot in a canyon; the falls run best after spring snowmelt or rain. Check that the road and site are open.

Guadalupe Mountains National Park

go

Door to door: About 1 h to the visitor centre

Drive US 62/180 southwest into Texas

Add a night or a long day if you want the high-country trails; the peak hike is a full day.

Brantley Lake

caution

Door to door: About 30 min

Drive north of town

Reservoir for camping, fishing and flat-water paddling; not a swimming-lake day out.

Roswell

go

Door to door: About 1.5 h

Drive US 285 north

UFO museums and a very different town; easy half-day or a stop en route north.

El Paso, Texas

skip

Door to door: About 2.5 h

Drive US 62/180 west

Too far for a day return if you also want the caves; treat it as an arrival or departure leg.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

South Canal Street

The motel strip on the highway through town; most beds, easiest parking, 20-30 min to the park entrance.

Downtown / Eddy Street area

Walkable to the Pecos River walk and a few restaurants; fewer rooms and they fill on cave-season weekends.

North side near US 285

Newer chain hotels and the mall; good if you are continuing to Roswell or Artesia.

Watch out

Safety

Carlsbad is a quiet small city and the tourist areas are calm, but it has a working oilfield economy and some property crime - lock the car, do not leave gear visible, and stay on lit streets downtown after dark. The bigger real risks are desert heat, long empty drives and ice on the park road.
  • Summer afternoons hit 38-40 °C (100-104 °F); carry water and do not hike the desert trails midday.
  • The park road climbs to over 1,300 m and can ice up in winter - check road conditions before setting out.
  • Cave entry is by timed ticket in busy periods; walk-ups can be turned away. Book on the official park site.
  • Do not buy cave formations or souvenirs made from them; taking or possessing them can be illegal.
  • Distances between towns here are long and cell signal is patchy - keep the tank above half.

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contracts for CNM and ELP: last connections, drive times, rental-car desks and a motel fallback.
  2. Four walking and driving clusters with rescue anchors: downtown and the river walk, South Canal Street, the park visitor centre, SR 137.
  3. Place pages with verified hours and cutoffs (caverns visitor centre, Living Desert Zoo, Sitting Bull Falls) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Summer-heat and winter-ice fixtures so the cave day can go green or be pushed.
