How to pay
MyCiTi does not take contactless bank cards or phone wallets. You need a myconnect card, bought and loaded at a station kiosk or participating retailer, then tapped on the reader at the bus door. Metrorail sells tickets at station windows and some machines. Cash is widely used, and card acceptance varies by station. Ride-hailing is paid in the app, which is why it is the simplest option for a short visit.

From the airport
Cape Town International (CPT) is about 20–30 minutes by car from the city centre outside rush hour. MyCiTi route 1 runs between the airport and the city centre for about R100 (2026 estimate), with luggage space and a fixed route; it is the cheapest fixed-price way in. Confirm the current route, fare and hours with MyCiTi before you rely on it (check).
Ride-hailing from the airport costs more but drops you at the door, which matters with bags or a late arrival. Follow the signs to the designated pick-up area rather than accepting an offer inside the terminal.
A rental car makes sense if you are continuing to the Winelands, the Garden Route or the Cape Peninsula; pick it up at the airport and skip the city bus entirely.

Tips
Plan around daylight. The bus network thins out in the evening and trains are best avoided after dark; use Uber or Bolt for nights out and check the number plate before getting in.
Keep the myconnect card topped up and tap out as well as in, or you may be charged the maximum band. Buy the card at a staffed kiosk so you can ask about current fares and routes.
If your trip is mostly the Waterfront, the city centre and one or two beaches, the bus plus a couple of ride-hails is cheaper than a rental car and avoids parking. If you want the Cape Peninsula, Stellenbosch or Franschhoek, book a car instead.
