Caniapiscau is a 70,390-km² regional county municipality in northeastern Quebec with about 4,260 people, and almost all of it is roadless bush, bog and water. Two towns anchor it: Fermont, reached by the often-gravel Route 389 from Baie-Comeau (566 km, 6–8 hours), and Schefferville, which has no road at all and is reached by the Tshiuetin train from Sept-Îles or by air. Come for outfitter-run fishing and caribou hunting camps, the Caniapiscau Reservoir (the largest body of water in Quebec), aurora and dark skies, and the Défi Taïga sled-dog race. Come with your own logistics, or do not come.
