How to choose, step by step
Step 1: fix your route. The country facts recommend landing in Douala, giving the West region 3–4 nights and the Kribi coast 2–3. Choose accommodation to match those stops rather than moving every night; road transfers take hours and night driving is dangerous.
Step 2: pick the area inside each city. In Douala, Bonanjo and Bonapriso are the usual bases for hotels and restaurants; in Yaoundé, the centre and Bastos have the widest choice (check). In Kribi, decide between the town centre and a beach plot a short ride out.
Step 3: pick the type. Guesthouses and small hotels dominate outside the two big cities; beach bungalows and community camps serve Kribi, Campo Ma'an and Ebodjé. Larger city hotels are the only places likely to take cards, so carry cash XAF for everything else.
Step 4: check the practicals before paying. Ask about a generator or backup power, mosquito nets, hot water and whether the quoted price includes the tourist tax (check). Confirm the exact address and a phone number you can give a driver.
Step 5: book the first and last nights ahead. Arriving in Douala without a room is workable but slow; pre-booking the first night and the Kribi stay in high season saves time.
