Best things to do in Cambridge, including free and rainy-day options

Cambridge is a small Waikato town of tree-lined streets, antique shops and thoroughbred stud farms, not a destination with a long list of ticketed attractions. The decision is simple: if you are passing between Auckland, Hamilton and Rotorua, stop for two to four hours and walk the centre. If you want the excursions — Hobbiton, Lake Karāpiro, Waitomo — stay one or two nights and treat Cambridge as a quiet, cheaper base.

Skip Cambridge entirely if your trip is a short South Island itinerary or if you have no car and no interest in the Waikato. Choose it over Hamilton if you prefer a village feel and do not need a city's restaurants and nightlife.

The town itself is the easy win. Cambridge's centre is compact: a main street of shops and cafés, the town hall, and Victoria Square with its trees and war memorial. Walk it in an hour, linger for coffee, and you have seen the core. The Waikato River runs along the edge of town, and the Te Awa trail follows it on both banks — a flat, sealed path that works for a short stroll or a longer ride. Lake Te Koo Utu, a small lake just south of the centre, has a loop track and is the closest thing to a parkland walk in town.

Lake Karāpiro, about 10–15 minutes' drive southeast, is the area's outdoor draw: a hydro lake used for rowing and watersports, with picnic spots and a lookout over the dam. On a warm day it is the best free thing to do near Cambridge. On a cold or wet day it is not worth the drive.

Hobbiton, near Matamata, is the single most popular paid attraction in the area and the reason many travellers stop here at all. Tours run on a schedule and sell out in peak season, so book ahead and arrive at your slot; the drive from Cambridge is roughly 20–30 minutes. Waitomo's glowworm caves are further south, about an hour to 90 minutes by car, and make a solid half-day trip or a rainy-day plan.

Beyond that, the Waikato is farmland and stud country. Several thoroughbred operations and equine experiences sit around Cambridge; availability and prices change, so check before you build a day around one. Hamilton, 25 km away, adds gardens, a museum and a bigger food scene if Cambridge feels too quiet.

A day in Cambridge can cost almost nothing: parking in the centre, a walk, a picnic by the river. Budget for one paid excursion if you are basing here — Hobbiton is the big-ticket item at roughly NZ$120–150 per adult, and Waitomo caves around NZ$70–80. Both figures are 2026 estimates and change by season and operator, so confirm when you book.

Accommodation in Cambridge is generally cheaper than Hamilton or Auckland for the same standard, which is the main argument for sleeping here rather than passing through. Petrol is the other real cost: the excursions are all drives, and there is no practical public transport to Hobbiton or Karāpiro.
