Start in the town centre, where the main street runs a short block of cafés, shops and the information point. Walk to the Waikato River and follow the riverside path; the loop through town and back takes under an hour at an easy pace (check). Cambridge is known for its tree-lined streets and equine industry, so a short drive or walk past the stud farms and racecourse area fills the middle of the day.

In the afternoon, drive 20–30 minutes to Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari, a pest-fenced forest with walking tracks and a visitor centre (check). If you would rather not drive, keep the day to the town, the river and a long lunch, and treat Cambridge as a half-day stop on the way to Hamilton or Rotorua.

If you have a car and book ahead, the alternative one-day version is the town in the morning and a Hobbiton movie-set tour in the afternoon. Tours run on fixed times, so book before you arrive (check).

Day one: the town, the river and Sanctuary Mountain as above. Day two: pick one big side trip rather than two. Hobbiton is the shorter drive and the easier half-day; Waitomo Caves is a longer day out, with the drive alone taking about 75–90 minutes each way (check).

If you are travelling between Auckland and Rotorua, Cambridge works as a two-night base: Hobbiton on the way south, Waitomo as a loop west, and the town itself for the evenings. Keep the driving to one side trip per day; doing both in one day means several hours at the wheel (check).

Day three adds either Waitomo Caves if you skipped them, or a half-day in Hamilton, about 25–30 minutes away by car (check), for the Hamilton Gardens and the river. Cyclists can use the day for the Waikato River trails and the Te Awa cycleway, which passes through the area.

Three days is the point where Cambridge stops being a stopover and becomes a base. You can also use the third day for a slower loop: a morning at the sanctuary, an afternoon in town, and an evening without a drive.
