Best day trips from Cambridge: how to get there and what to see

Cambridge is a small Waikato town between Hamilton and Matamata, which makes it a good base for short drives rather than long ones. If you have one free day, drive to Waitomo for the glowworm caves and come back through Ōtorohanga. If you have two, add Hobbiton at Matamata and Hamilton Gardens.

Everything below is a day trip, not an overnight: the furthest is about 1.5 hours each way. Distances and times are 2026 estimates and assume a car; public transport in this part of Waikato is thin, so most travellers either drive or join a tour.

Hamilton is the obvious first trip: the Waikato River, the museum and the themed Hamilton Gardens, which are free to enter and worth two hours on their own. It is also the only destination on this list with a usable bus link from Cambridge, so it works if you have no car.

Waitomo is the classic Waikato day out. The drive south on SH3 passes through Ōtorohanga, and the main cave tour is a boat ride under glowworms. Book a time slot in summer; the popular departures sell out. Allow half a day for one cave, most of a day if you add a second cave or the nearby walks.

Hobbiton at Matamata is 25 minutes away and runs guided tours of the film set on a fixed schedule. It is a half-day trip and pairs well with a stop in Matamata town. Maungatautari, a pest-fenced sanctuary south-east of Cambridge, is a quieter half day of forest and birdlife, best in dry weather.

For a full day, drive west to Raglan: a surf town on a harbour with black-sand beaches and a relaxed main street. The road over the hills is winding, so allow more time than the distance suggests. Cyclists can instead ride the Te Awa river trail towards Hamilton and return by bus or with a second car.

Fuel is the main cost if you drive. A return run to Waitomo is roughly 130 km, and to Raglan about 150 km; at 2026 pump prices that is a modest fuel bill, but check current prices locally. Paid attractions are the cave tours, Hobbiton and the Maungatautari entry fee.

Tours bundle transport and entry, which is the simplest option without a car but usually costs more than driving yourself. Budget a full day tour from about NZ$150–250 per person depending on how many stops it includes (check).

Start early. SH1 and SH3 carry trucks and farm vehicles, and a 25-minute estimate can stretch in the morning peak or at harvest time.

Check the weather the night before. Raglan and Maungatautari are outdoor trips and lose most of their value in heavy rain; Waitomo's caves are underground and work in any weather, which makes them the reliable wet-day choice.

Book Waitomo and Hobbiton ahead in the December to February peak and during school holidays. Off-season you can often decide on the day.
