Best day trips from Cambridge: how to get there and what to see

If you have one free day in Cambridge, pick by how far you are willing to drive. Under 30 minutes gets you Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, the strongest single trip from here: a flat driving loop through marsh, bald-eagle and waterfowl habitat. Thirty to forty-five minutes gets you the colonial bay towns — St. Michaels, Oxford and Chestertown — each small enough to cover on foot in an afternoon. Ninety minutes or more gets you the Atlantic: Ocean City's boardwalk and Assateague Island's wild horses.

Two trips in one day is possible if you pair a refuge morning with a St. Michaels afternoon, since both sit east of Cambridge. Do not try to combine Ocean City with anything else; the drive alone eats four hours.

Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge is the reason many people come to Cambridge at all. A self-drive wildlife loop crosses marsh and open water, with pull-offs for herons, ospreys, bald eagles and, in winter, large rafts of waterfowl. Go early: wildlife is most active in the first hours after sunrise, and the light is better. Bring binoculars and insect repellent in summer.

St. Michaels is the classic Chesapeake day out: a small grid of streets, a maritime museum, and waterfront restaurants where you can eat crab. It is walkable end to end in an afternoon. Oxford, a short drive south, is quieter — a tiny waterfront village with a few streets and a seasonal ferry link across the Tred Avon. Chestertown, up the Chester River, has a longer historic main street and a college campus; it pairs well with a stop at a riverside park.

Ocean City is Maryland's beach resort: a long boardwalk, amusement rides, and a wide Atlantic beach. In summer it is busy and parking is the main friction; arrive before mid-morning or after 4pm. Assateague Island, just south, is the opposite: a barrier island of dunes, marsh and wild horses. Keep your distance from the horses — they bite and raid food — and check the park's rules before you go.

Annapolis, across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, is the state capital: a brick historic district, a waterfront, and the US Naval Academy. It is the best option if you are heading west anyway, but the bridge toll and summer backups make it a full-day commitment.

Most of these trips are cheap once you have a car. The refuge, the town streets and the boardwalks cost nothing to enter; you pay for fuel, parking and food. A rough day budget for two people, driving 60–120 km round trip, is US$40–80 including lunch, or US$10–20 of fuel if you pack food.

Museum and park entry fees change; treat any figure here as a 2026 estimate and confirm on the operator's own site before you drive. Summer parking in Ocean City is the single biggest variable — lots near the boardwalk fill early and charge by the day.

Start early. On the Eastern Shore the roads are two-lane and slow behind farm equipment, and the refuge loop is best in morning light. If you are heading to Ocean City on a summer Saturday, leave Cambridge by 8am to beat the beach traffic on US-50.

Fill the tank in Cambridge before you go; gas stations thin out on the marsh roads. Carry water, especially at Blackwater, where there is little shade. Cell signal is patchy in the refuge.

If you have no car, do not plan around these trips. There is no scheduled bus or train linking Cambridge to St. Michaels, Oxford, Chestertown or Ocean City. Your options are a taxi or rideshare (expensive for the longer runs), a booked tour, or a bike if you are fit and sticking to the closer towns.
