Camarillo

One night is enough: shop the outlets, walk Old Town, then use it as a cheap 101 base between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara.

Camarillo is a suburban Ventura County city 86 km north of Los Angeles on the US 101, best known for one of Southern California's largest outlet malls. Old Town is a short, walkable strip of shops and restaurants near the Amtrak/Metrolink station. Most travellers pass through by car; a single night covers the outlets and Old Town, and the city works well as a lower-cost base for Oxnard, Ventura and the Santa Monica Mountains.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is the practical way: the city is spread out and the 101 runs through the middle. Camarillo Area Transit (CAT) runs limited fixed routes plus a dial-a-ride service within the city (about $2 a trip — check current fare and hours). Amtrak Pacific Surfliner and Metrolink stop at the Camarillo station at Lewis Road and Ventura Road, at the edge of Old Town. Walking works inside Old Town and around the outlets, not between them.

Chain hotels and motels close to the outlet mall and US 101; best if shopping is the point of the stop.

Verdugo Way / east Camarillo

Quieter business-park hotels with free parking; a car is needed for everything.

Watch out

Safety

Camarillo is a low-crime suburban city and generally safe for visitors. The real risks are US 101 traffic, fast suburban roads and heat on summer afternoons; keep valuables out of sight in outlet parking lots.
  • US 101 traffic is heavy on weekday mornings and late afternoons; add time for any Los Angeles or Santa Barbara leg.
  • Outlet parking fills on weekends and holiday shopping days, including the last Friday in November.
  • Summer afternoons can be hot inland; coastal fog is common in the mornings.
  • Suburban streets are wide and drivers fast; use crossings in Old Town and near the outlets.
