Caltanissetta
One night only, and only for Easter week or the sulphur-mine sites; otherwise skip it and sleep in Palermo or Agrigento.
Caltanissetta is a hill city in central Sicily, about 1 h 45 min by bus from Palermo and 1 h 45 min from Catania airport. It was the world's sulphur capital in the 19th century and keeps a compact Baroque centre, two good museums and the island's biggest Easter rituals. There is no beach, no big-name sight and little English in the service trades, so it works as a one-night stop for Easter week, mine history or the archaeological parks, not as a base for a first Sicily trip.

Get around
City buses (SCAT) are the only public transport; all lines start and end at the central station. A single ticket is €1.20 and lasts 75 minutes, a day ticket €3, a weekly pass €15 (2026 estimate). Taxis are few and wait only at the station and the bus terminal. The centre is walkable, but the museums and the abbey sit on the edge of town, so a car or a taxi helps.
