Cairo rewards couples who plan the evening around one thing rather than five. The Nile is the obvious anchor: a private felucca with a captain, no music and no other passengers, is the cheapest way to get the river to yourselves. Book at the dock near the Zamalek side or through your hotel, agree the duration and price first, and take the last hour before sunset.

Second, food with a view. Zamalek and the Nile corniche have rooftop and terrace restaurants where the table, not the menu, is the point. Third, gardens and old streets after dark: Al-Azhar Park for the skyline, then a walk through Khan el-Khalili when the crowds thin. The dinner-cruise boats are the one thing to think twice about: fixed timetables, buffet food and a loud show, which suits some couples and not others.

Treat every figure here as a 2026 estimate and confirm on the day; Egyptian prices move with the exchange rate and with the season. Felucca captains quote per boat, not per person, and the price depends on the hour and how busy the dock is. Restaurants on the Nile add service and tax, which can push a bill noticeably above the menu price.

For opening hours, the safe pattern is: gardens and parks close around sunset or shortly after, restaurants serve late into the night, and anything with a fixed show (cruises, sound and light) runs on a set schedule you should book a day ahead. Islamic Cairo shops stay open late but many close on Friday morning.

Central Cairo is spread out and the traffic is the real constraint, so build 30–45 minutes into any evening plan that crosses the river. Uber and Careem work well and give a fixed price; white taxis are fine if you agree the fare first. The metro is quick by day but stops early in the evening and is not the easiest option for a late dinner.

For the felucca docks, aim for Zamalek or the stretch near the city centre hotels, where boats leave all evening. Al-Azhar Park sits in Islamic Cairo, a short ride from Khan el-Khalili, so pair them in one evening rather than two. Giza and the pyramids are a separate trip across the river; if you are going for a sound and light show, arrange the return ride in advance because it is hard to find a car at the exit.

Book the two things that sell out: a rooftop table with a view and any fixed-show evening. For the felucca, no booking is needed, but go to the dock in person an hour before sunset rather than trusting a hotel markup. Carry small notes for tips; captains, drivers and café staff all expect something small.

Dress is relaxed in hotels and Nile-side restaurants, but Islamic Cairo is conservative, so shoulders and knees covered makes the evening easier. If you are in Cairo in summer, shift everything later: the heat holds until well after sunset and the pleasant window is 20:00 onwards. In winter, evenings are cool enough for a jacket on the water.

For a rainy or cold night, swap the river for an indoor plan: a long dinner, a hotel spa or a hammam. Keep the romantic evening to one anchor plus one walk; Cairo's distances punish over-scheduling more than most cities.

October to April is the comfortable window, matching the country's main season: mild days, cool evenings, and a sunset that lands early enough to pair with dinner. December and January evenings can be cold on the water, so a felucca is better at the start of the trip than the end of the night.

Summer (roughly May to September) is hot and the city stays awake late; plan the romantic slot for after 20:00 and keep it short. Ramadan evenings are their own thing: iftar and suhoor meals, lanterns in the streets and a lively atmosphere after sunset, but some restaurants run different hours, so check before you book.
