Cairo has no strict citywide curfew for bars, but alcohol is sold mainly in tourist hotels, Zamalek and a few Downtown bars — many ordinary restaurants do not serve it at all, especially away from the Nile-side districts. During Ramadan, sales are restricted by law in most public venues.

Family fun

What works with kids, by age band.

  • Uneven pavements and traffic make a stroller hard work outside malls and hotel grounds; a carrier works better for Islamic Cairo and the Khan.
  • Camel and horse rides at the Giza plateau are popular with children but come with the same price-agreement rules as for adults: fix the total before mounting.
  • Al-Azhar Park has grass, shade and space to run — the easiest outdoor break for younger children in the old city area.
  • The Egyptian Museum and the Grand Egyptian Museum both reward kids who like mummies and treasure; go early before the galleries fill.
  • Heat: plan outdoor time before 10:00 and after 16:00 with children May–September, and carry water and sun hats.
