Layover in Cairo: what to do

Yes, if you are allowed into Egypt and you have enough time. Cairo International sits about 20 km northeast of downtown, and the road to Giza runs west across the city. Traffic is the variable: the same trip can take 45 minutes at 06:00 and 90 minutes at 17:00.

The practical rule is 8 hours minimum from landing to take-off. That covers immigration, a taxi each way, one stop of 2 to 3 hours, and the 3-hour check-in buffer most airlines want. If your layover is 6 hours or less, stay airside: the maths does not work once you add immigration queues and the return security check.

Two things change the answer. First, your passport: without a visa or visa on arrival you cannot leave the transit area. Second, your bags: if they are checked through to the final destination, you travel light, which saves 30 to 45 minutes.

Egypt issues visas on arrival at Cairo airport to many nationalities, and some travellers can get a free 96-hour transit visa if they arrive and depart within that window. Rules change, so check your own passport with an official source before booking a tight connection.

If you already hold a valid visa or residence permit for the US, UK, Schengen area, Canada, Australia, New Zealand or Japan, you may qualify for a visa on arrival regardless of nationality. Carry the document itself, not a photo.

If you cannot enter, you can still use the airport: Terminal 3 has cafés, lounges and a transit hotel. Do not leave the secure area without a visa; you will be turned back at immigration.

If your bags are not checked through, you have three options. Left-luggage counters at Cairo International take bags for a daily fee; confirm the location, hours and price at the airport, since counters move between terminals.

The second option is a day room or transit hotel at the airport, which lets you leave bags, shower and rest between flights. The third is to take bags with you: taxis and Ubers in Cairo are cheap, but hauling a suitcase around the pyramids in the heat is a poor use of a short layover.

Keep your passport, boarding pass and valuables on you at all times, whichever option you choose.

Uber and Careem are the default: no haggling, price shown in the app, and both work at the airport. Expect EGP 150–300 to downtown or Giza depending on surge and traffic (2026 estimate). Official airport taxis use a fixed-price desk inside the terminal; agree the price before you get in, and pay in EGP.

Allow 45–90 minutes each way. The airport road feeds into a ring road that jams hard from about 07:00 to 10:00 and 16:00 to 20:00. If your layover lands in those windows, cut your sightseeing time by half an hour.

For the return, aim to be at the terminal 3 hours before an international departure. Terminal 3 handles most international carriers; Terminals 1 and 2 are separate buildings, so check your airline's terminal before you leave.

Six hours: stay at the airport. Use a lounge or the transit hotel, eat, shower, and keep the connection safe.

Twelve hours: one sight, not two. The Grand Egyptian Museum or the Giza pyramids are both west of the city and closer to the airport road than downtown. Pick one, spend 2 to 3 hours, and leave. If you would rather stay central, the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir and a walk through Khan el-Khalili fit a 12-hour window, but traffic makes this the riskier choice.

Twenty-four hours: arrive, sleep near the airport or in Giza, then do Giza at opening (about 07:00) before the heat and the crowds, followed by the Grand Egyptian Museum. Add Islamic Cairo or Khan el-Khalili in the evening. Book a hotel with a late checkout or a day room so you can shower before the flight.
