Best day trips from Cairo: how to get there and what to see

Distances are one way from central Cairo; times are typical road or rail times and vary with traffic. Prices are 2026 estimates for transport only, not entry tickets.

Alexandria is the one full day trip that works by public transport. Trains run through the day from Cairo's main station, and a reserved seat costs little; book ahead for morning departures. Once there, the library, the corniche and a seafood lunch fill a day, but you will not see much else. If you want the catacombs and the Roman sites too, stay a night.

Saqqara and Dahshur are usually done as one half day, and they are the best value for anyone who has already seen Giza. The Step Pyramid at Saqqara and the Bent and Red Pyramids at Dahshur sit on the same road southwest of the city. There is no useful public transport between the sites, so a car or a driver for four to five hours is the practical option.

Fayoum is a longer day: desert lakes, pottery villages and, for the committed, Wadi al-Hitan with its whale fossils. It needs a full day and a car. Giza and Islamic Cairo are not day trips at all — they are part of Cairo, and you should give each a half day from your base rather than treating them as excursions.

Anything further — Luxor, Aswan, Abu Simbel, Siwa, the Red Sea — is not a day trip. The distances are too long and the roads or flights eat the day. Fly or take the sleeper train and stay at least one night.

Train fares to Alexandria are cheap by Western standards; check the current price when you book, as fares change. A private car or driver for Saqqara, Dahshur or Fayoum is the main cost of those trips, and prices are negotiable — agree the total, the waiting time and the return time before you set off. Entry tickets at archaeological sites are separate and priced in Egyptian pounds for foreign visitors; check at the gate or online before you go.

Start early. Cairo traffic builds from about 07:00 and a late start can add an hour or two to any road trip. For trains, arrive at the station 30 minutes before departure and keep your passport with you; tickets are checked and security screening is normal.

Carry cash in small notes for tickets, toilets and tips, and bring water and sun protection — most sites have little shade. Friday is the quietest morning on the roads but some shops and sites keep shorter hours. If you are doing several trips, a driver booked for two or three days usually costs less per day than single bookings.
