West, Busan: neighborhood guide

West Busan covers three districts: Sasang-gu, Gangseo-gu and Saha-gu. It is the city's working edge — industrial parks, docks, the airport and the Nakdong River mouth — not a sightseeing core. Sasang holds the big intercity bus terminal and sits beside Gimhae town; Gangseo is mostly airport, port and wetland; Saha-gu runs along the coast to Dadaepo.

That mix is the point. You get transport links and river-mouth nature in the same zone, at lower room rates than the beach districts. What you do not get is a dense old-town grid to wander. Attractions here are spread out and reached by metro plus bus, so plan legs rather than strolls.

The two names most travellers come for are Gamcheon Culture Village, a hillside of stepped houses and alleys above Saha-gu, and Dadaepo Beach, the only Busan beach facing west, which makes it the sunset beach. Between and around them are quieter stops: Molundae headland, Amisan Observatory, Janglim Harbor, and the Nakdong estuary islands with their winter birds.

Stay if your trip is built around transport or a quiet coast. A late arrival or early departure at Gimhae, a bus out to another province from Sasang, or a KTX leg that is easier from Gupo all argue for one or two nights here. Dadaepo also works for a slow, cheap beach base with sunset views and no crowd.

Do not stay if this is your first Busan trip and you want the classic experience. Seomyeon's restaurants and bars, Jagalchi market, Gwangalli and Haeundae are all in Central, Suyeong or Haeundae, and commuting from the west eats an hour or more each way. Book there and treat the west as day trips.

A middle option: one night near Sasang or Gupo for the airport or bus, then move east for the rest of the stay. Rooms near the terminals are the cheapest in the city and the metro makes the switch simple.

Food here is everyday Busan food rather than destination dining. Around Sasang station and the bus terminal you find 24-hour gukbap and pork soup houses, barbecue, and convenience stores for late arrivals; Dadaepo has a strip of raw-fish and seafood places facing the water, busiest at sunset. Saha-gu's market streets do the usual noodles, mandu and street snacks.

Expect the national pattern: restaurants roughly 11:00–22:00 with a common 15:00–17:00 break, barbecue places running much later, no tipping, and free water on the table. If you land late, eat near your hotel rather than travelling east for dinner.

For a proper seafood market experience, Jagalchi is in Central, not here — plan it as a separate trip rather than expecting it on your doorstep.

Metro Line 1 runs through Saha-gu to Dadaepo Beach, with Dadaepo Beach station right in front of the sand. Line 2 covers the Sasang area and links to the Gimhae light rail, which connects the city to Gimhae International Airport and Gimhae town. Line 3 serves Gupo, the KTX stop that is closer to this side of Busan than Busan station is.

Sasang Bus Station has intercity connections across South Korea, so it is the departure point for routes off the rail line. Buses fill the gaps for the coast and river sights: 338 from Sasang or Hadan to Janglim Harbor, 3 or 96 from Dadaepo Beach station to Amisan Observatory, and 3, 58, 58-1 or 58-2 from Hadan for Eulsukdo.

The Nakdong estuary sanctuary is difficult to reach by land; the usual approach is a boat from Myeongji-dong harbor. Taxis are cheap for three or four people and worth it for the last stretch to Molundae or the observatory. Subway runs about 05:30 to midnight, so plan the return from a sunset visit before the last train.
