Budapest in August: what to expect

August is the hottest month in Budapest alongside July. Expect daytime highs around 28–30 °C and nights near 16–18 °C, with occasional heat spells pushing past 35 °C for two or three days at a time. Humidity is moderate; the worst of the heat lands in the early afternoon.

Rain comes as short, heavy afternoon or evening thunderstorms rather than all-day drizzle — roughly 8–10 wet days across the month. Mornings are usually the cleanest window. Daylight is long, so a 19:00 walk along the Danube still feels like late afternoon.

This is the busiest and most expensive month. Sziget Festival brings tens of thousands of visitors, and the 20 August national holiday fills central Budapest with Hungarians as well as tourists. Hotel rates in the centre roughly double against May or October, and the cheapest beds sell out first.

Book accommodation four to eight weeks ahead for Sziget week and the 20 August long weekend; later than that you are choosing between outer districts and higher prices. Thermal baths, ruin bars and the Parliament tour all need timed tickets in peak weeks. If your dates are flexible, the last days of August are noticeably calmer than the first two weeks.

Two events define the month. Sziget Festival, on Óbuda Island, runs for about a week in early to mid August with international headliners and a campsite on site. St Stephen's Day on 20 August is the national holiday: a fireworks display over the Danube, an air show, and the Street of Hungarian Flavours food event around the castle. Central Budapest is closed to traffic and packed that evening.

Outside those dates, August is a normal summer month: open-air concerts, the Budapest Summer Festival on Margaret Island, and full terraces along the river. Confirm exact dates each year — Sziget and the 20 August programme shift slightly.

Build the day around water and shade. The Széchenyi and Gellért thermal baths are the obvious August move — go at opening (around 09:00) or after 17:00 to avoid the midday crush. Margaret Island gives you pools, fountains and tree cover within walking distance of the centre.

For sightseeing, do the Castle District and Fisherman's Bastion early, before 10:00, then retreat indoors: the Parliament tour, the National Museum, or the Great Market Hall. Evenings belong to the Danube — a river cruise or a walk from the Chain Bridge to Margaret Bridge — and to the ruin bars in District VII. If the heat is too much, a day trip to Szentendre or the Danube Bend is cooler and easy by train or boat.

Light, loose clothing in breathable fabrics, a hat and sunglasses, and a refillable bottle — Budapest has public drinking fountains and refill points. Bring swimwear and a quick-dry towel for the baths; many rent towels but queues are long in August.

Add a light rain shell for the afternoon storms, comfortable broken-in shoes for cobblestones, and a small day bag you can keep zipped in crowds. Sunscreen matters more than most visitors expect at 30 °C with long days. For Sziget, pack earplugs and a padlock if you are camping.

July is nearly as hot and busy, with Balaton at its peak. September is the best month overall for Budapest: warm days, wine harvest, medium crowds and lower prices. October brings autumn colour and wine festivals. June is warm with long days and slightly softer prices than August.
