Bruthen
Stop for 2–3 hours: bakery, brewery, Tambo River walk and the rail trail bridge. Sleep here only if you want a quiet Gippsland night off the highway.
Bruthen is a small Tambo River town on the Great Alpine Road, a few minutes off the Princes Highway between Bairnsdale and Nowa Nowa. It is a leg-stretch stop with a bakery, a brewery and a rail trail, not a destination in itself. Two to three hours covers it; one night suits cyclists and slow drivers.

- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Very limited beds and food: two takeaway-style eateries and one hotel; arrive before evening or carry supplies.
- Kangaroos and wombats are common on the Great Alpine Road and C620 at dawn and dusk — drive slowly and scan the verges.
- Bushfire risk in summer: check VicEmergency before driving into East Gippsland (check the current warning number).
A quiet, low-crime country town; the real risks are wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk, patchy phone signal, and summer bushfire. Check VicEmergency before you drive.
