The stages
Sydney to the mountains. The first two hours climb through the Blue Mountains. Katoomba and Lithgow are the scenic highlights, with escarpment views on the left side heading west.
Mountains to the plains. Bathurst, Blayney and Orange cross rolling farmland and wine country. Orange is a good lunch stop in the buffet car sense, though you stay on board.
The long middle. Parkes, Condobolin and Euabalong West are the flat, dry centre. This is where the outback feel starts. Ivanhoe is remote and has no town services at the station.
The far west. Darnick and Menindee come next. Menindee is the gateway to the Menindee Lakes and Kinchega National Park. Broken Hill arrives in the evening.
At Broken Hill, the Sulphide St Rail Museum holds the retired Silver City Comet, the train that ran this line from 1937.

The outback summer is harsh. December to February can push past 40 °C in Broken Hill and the far west, and the train is air-conditioned but the stops are not. April to September is the comfortable window, with mild days and cold nights (check current conditions).
The service runs weekly, so check the timetable against your dates. Broken Hill observes a 30-minute time difference from the rest of New South Wales, and the timetable does not change for daylight saving.

Where to stay
