Brisbane nightlife: best areas, bars and safety tips

Brisbane's nightlife is compact. Almost everything worth doing sits within a few kilometres of the river, and the three main clusters — Fortitude Valley, South Bank and West End — are linked by train, bus, ferry and a flat riverside walk.

Fortitude Valley is the default for a proper night out: the densest run of bars, live-music rooms and late venues in the city, all within a few blocks of Brunswick Street. South Bank suits an earlier, calmer evening — riverside restaurants, a couple of bars and the walk along the water. West End is smaller and more local, with pubs and small bars along Boundary Street. The CBD adds rooftop and laneway bars that work well before a show at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre or a game at Suncorp Stadium.

Brisbane drink prices sit in the middle of the Australian range — cheaper than Sydney's CBD, similar to Melbourne. A schooner (about 425 ml) of local lager is usually A$10–14, a pint A$12–16, and a house cocktail A$25–30. Many venues run happy hour from about 4pm to 6pm on weekdays, when beer can drop to A$7–9.

Kitchens generally serve until 9pm or 10pm, so eat before you drink. Venues typically close around 3am, with last drinks called earlier; some late licences require ID scanning on entry. Sunday sessions are popular and finish much earlier than a Saturday night.

Fortitude Valley has its own train station on the Beenleigh, Caboolture and Redcliffe lines, a five-minute walk from Brunswick Street. South Bank station serves the South Bank parklands, and the free CityHopper ferry stops at both South Bank and the CBD riverside — useful if you want to move between areas without paying a fare.

Trains run late on Friday and Saturday nights but not all night, and the last service varies by line, so check the timetable before you go out rather than after. Rideshare pick-up points in Fortitude Valley are signed and can be busy at closing time; walking a block or two away usually gets you a car faster. Driving is a poor idea: parking is limited and expensive, and random breath testing is common.

Brisbane is a safe city by international standards, but the usual late-night rules apply: stay with people you know, keep an eye on your drink, and avoid walking alone through empty streets after 2am. Fortitude Valley has a visible police and security presence on weekend nights, and ID scanning applies at many late venues — carry photo ID even if you are well past 18.

Summer (December to February) is hot and humid, with afternoon storms; a light layer is useful because venues run strong air conditioning. Winter nights (June to August) can drop to around 8–12 °C, so bring a jacket if you are walking between areas. Tipping is not expected in Australia.

Thursday is the quietest of the main nights and the easiest for walk-in tables. Friday and Saturday are busiest, with queues after about 9pm at the most popular venues. Sunday sessions are relaxed and end early, which suits a last night before a flight.

Brisbane's best months for a night out are April to October, when evenings are mild and dry. December to February is hot, humid and storm-prone, though the bars are air-conditioned. Check public holidays and major events — big concerts and matches at Suncorp Stadium fill Fortitude Valley and Caxton Street quickly, and the same nights are the worst for finding a table without a booking.
