Brisbane in May: what to expect

May is Brisbane's transition out of the wet season. The summer storms are done, humidity drops and most days are clear and mild: a light-jacket morning, a warm afternoon, a cool evening. Rain still arrives, but usually as short showers rather than the afternoon downpours of January and February.

It is not beach-hot. If your plan is lying on a surf beach all day, the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast are better in March or April. If your plan is walking, markets, river ferries, gardens and day trips, May is close to ideal — the same weather that makes it a good month for the rest of South East Queensland.

May sits in the gap between the Easter holidays and the June–July Queensland school break, so it is one of the quietest months of the year in the city. Hotel rates in the CBD and South Bank are usually well below the December–January peak and below July. Weekend rates still rise, especially around events at Suncorp Stadium or the Gabba.

Book flights and accommodation two to four weeks ahead for the best rates; you rarely need to book months out in May. Popular day tours — Moreton Island, North Stradbroke Island, the Australia Zoo run — can be booked a day or two before. If a big concert or football final lands on your dates, prices spike for that weekend only.

May is a strong month for the city's cultural calendar. The Brisbane Comedy Festival usually runs from late April into May, with shows across the city. The Anywhere Festival puts performances in unusual spaces — backyards, shops, car parks — over several weeks in May. The Buddha Birth Day Festival at South Bank, one of the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere, usually falls in early May.

The Brisbane Racing Carnival builds through May towards its biggest days in late May and early June. Check exact dates each year: some events shift by a week or two, and the comedy and Anywhere festivals have changed venues in past seasons.

Use the mild days for the outdoors. The South Bank Parklands, the City Botanic Gardens and the riverwalk are at their best now. The CityCat ferry is both transport and a cheap sightseeing trip; a Go card or contactless tap makes it easy. Walk or ride the river loop, and take the Story Bridge climb or the Kangaroo Point Cliffs for city views without summer heat.

Day trips work well in May. Moreton Island and North Stradbroke Island are good for sand, wildlife and snorkelling, though the water is cool. The Sunshine Coast hinterland and the Scenic Rim are green after the wet season, and the drive to the Gold Coast takes about an hour. For longer trips, May is the start of the dry season in the tropical north, so Cairns and the Whitsundays open up — but that is a flight, not a day trip.

Pack for a mild day and a cool night. A light jacket or hoodie, long trousers for evenings, and layers you can shed at midday. Bring a compact umbrella or rain shell — May showers are short but real. Comfortable walking shoes matter more than anything else in Brisbane, because the city rewards walking.

Sunscreen and a hat are still essential: UV in Queensland stays high even when the air is cool. A refillable water bottle is useful, and a light scarf or jumper helps on the ferry and in air-conditioned venues.

April is warmer and wetter, with Easter crowds and higher prices. June brings cooler nights, the start of the school holidays and more visitors, but also some of the clearest, driest days of the year. July is the busiest winter month and the most expensive of the three.

If you are flexible, May and September are the two sweet spots for Brisbane: dry, mild and outside the holiday peaks. If you are building a longer Australia trip, May is also when the tropical north and the Red Centre become comfortable, so it is a good month to combine Brisbane with Cairns or Uluru.

May gives you dry, mild days, low crowds and shoulder-season prices, and it is one of the few months when you can comfortably combine Brisbane with both the southern cities and the tropical north. The trade-off is that it is not beach-swimming weather and nights are cool enough for a jacket.

Skip May only if your trip is built around long days in the surf or you specifically want the summer festival season. Otherwise, book it: this is the month Brisbane locals would pick.
