Brisbane in April: what to expect

April is Brisbane's transition into autumn. Daytime highs sit near 26 °C and nights drop to about 16 °C, so mornings and evenings feel noticeably cooler than March. Humidity eases through the month and the summer storm pattern fades, which makes long days outdoors far more comfortable than in January or February.

Rain does not stop, but it changes character: fewer heavy afternoon storms and more passing showers. Expect roughly 8–10 rain days across the month. Sunshine stays generous at around 7–8 hours a day, and UV levels are still high enough that sunscreen matters on a clear afternoon.

April is a medium month on both counts. Outside school holidays, hotel rates and airfares are well below the December–January peak, and you can usually book popular restaurants and tours a few days ahead rather than weeks.

The exceptions are Easter — which can fall in late March or April — and the Anzac Day long weekend around 25 April. Both push domestic travel up sharply, and Queensland school holidays often overlap one or the other. If your dates land there, book accommodation and any car hire early; if they do not, April is one of the better-value months of the year in Brisbane.

Anzac Day on 25 April is the fixed point of the month: dawn services across the city, a public holiday, and many shops on reduced hours. Easter, when it falls in April, brings a four-day weekend and family travel. Dates for Easter and the Queensland school holidays shift each year, so check the calendar before locking in flights.

Beyond the holidays, April is a strong month for sport and outdoor events — the football codes are in season and the weather suits anything held outdoors. Specific festivals, exhibitions and match fixtures change year to year, so confirm what is on for your dates rather than planning around a fixed annual event.

April suits the whole city. The South Bank parklands and its man-made beach are pleasant without summer's heat, and the river walks and CityCat ferries are comfortable at any hour. The Brisbane River, Kangaroo Point cliffs and the botanic gardens all work well in autumn light.

It is also a good month for day trips. The beaches of the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast are about an hour away, and the hinterland towns are cooler and greener than in summer. Pack for a warm day and a cool evening. Light layers, a light rain jacket or compact umbrella, comfortable walking shoes and sunscreen cover most of it. A hat helps on clear afternoons, and a light jumper is worth having for evenings and for air-conditioned trains and venues.

If you plan to swim, add swimwear and a quick-dry towel — the sea and the South Bank lagoon are both usable in April. Insect repellent is useful for evenings near the river and in the hinterland.

March is hotter and more humid, with the summer storm pattern still active. May is cooler and drier again, with lower crowds and often the best-value rates of the autumn. If your dates are flexible, April and May are the two strongest months in this window.
