Brisbane is a river city, and where you sleep decides how much of it you walk. The CBD and South Bank sit on the same bend of the river, linked by the Goodwill Bridge and by ferries, so a first-timer can cover the museums, the botanic gardens and the riverfront without a car.
Fortitude Valley, one stop or a 20-minute walk from the CBD, is the nightlife and hostel zone. West End, across the river from the CBD, is quieter, greener and full of cheap restaurants. Getting there
Brisbane Airport is about 13 km northeast of the centre. The Airtrain runs to Central and Roma Street stations in roughly 20 minutes; a taxi or rideshare to the CBD takes about 20–30 minutes outside peak traffic. From the airport, the train is usually the simplest option for CBD, South Bank and Fortitude Valley stays.
Once in the city, the river ferries and the busway do most of the work. South Bank to the CBD is a 15–20 minute walk over the Goodwill Bridge. Fortitude Valley to the CBD is one train stop or a 20-minute walk. West End and Kangaroo Point are bus or ferry trips of 15–30 minutes rather than walks you would want with luggage.
If you are heading on to the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast or K'gari, a car picked up in the city or at the airport is easier than one collected from a CBD hotel with no parking. Parking in the CBD and South Bank is expensive; Kangaroo Point, Woolloongabba and Newstead are easier for a rental car.

Summer here is hot and humid, with afternoon storms from about December to February; a room with air conditioning matters more than a river view. Winter, June to August, is mild and dry and the best time to be outside. If your dates are fixed around a stadium event, book accommodation first and plan the rest around it.
Read the fine print on parking: many CBD and South Bank hotels charge per night, and street parking near the Valley is metered and enforced. Hostels in the Valley and West End are the usual answer for the lowest nightly cost.
