The trips in detail
San Francisco is the default day trip and the only big one that works well without a car. BART runs up the Peninsula into downtown, and from there Muni, buses and walking cover most of what a first-time visitor wants. Go early on a weekday to avoid the worst crowds at the waterfront, and take the last BART back rather than a late-night ride-share.
The San Mateo coast is the reason to have a car. Pacifica is the closest ocean access, with a pier, a beach and a short bluff trail; Half Moon Bay is a bigger harbour town with a historic main street and beaches north and south of it. Fog is common in summer mornings, so plan the coast for the afternoon if you want sun.
Muir Woods is the classic redwood stop, and the one that needs planning: parking and shuttle seats are reserved in advance and sell out on weekends.
