Where to stay in Brisbane: best neighborhoods and hotels

Brisbane is a residential bayside town of roughly 5,000 people on the San Francisco Peninsula, tucked between Daly City, South San Francisco and the San Bruno Mountain ridge. It is not a sightseeing base. It is a sleep-and-park base: close to San Francisco International Airport, close to the US-101 corridor, and usually cheaper than downtown San Francisco or Burlingame for the same night.

Choose it if you have an early flight, a car, or business along the Peninsula. Skip it if your trip is built around San Francisco neighbourhoods, cable cars and restaurants — you would spend 20–40 minutes each way in traffic or on transit.

The Baylands and Bayshore edge is the practical choice. Hotels here sit along the flat land between the bay and US-101, minutes from the airport and from the highway that runs up to San Francisco. You get free or low-cost parking, a shuttle or a short rideshare to the terminals, and a quiet night. You do not get a walkable restaurant strip; expect to drive or order in.

Old downtown, around Visitacion Avenue, is the only part of Brisbane with a genuine walkable core: a handful of places to eat and drink, a community park, and the library. Several small inns and guesthouses sit on the slopes above it, so the walk back is uphill. It suits travellers who want one relaxed evening without moving the car.

The hillside streets climbing toward San Bruno Mountain are the quietest option, with bay views from some rooms. They are residential, dark at night and impractical without a car. If you are here for the mountain trails, this is the closest base.

Two neighbours are worth considering instead. Burlingame has a denser restaurant strip and a Caltrain station, and Millbrae adds BART plus a large hotel cluster right by the airport. Both cost more per night but remove the need for a car.

Brisbane undercuts central San Francisco mainly on parking and taxes rather than on the room rate itself. A standard double in a chain hotel on the Baylands side is a 2026 estimate of US$150–250 before tax; small downtown inns run roughly US$130–220. Add roughly 12–15% in local hotel taxes, and check whether a resort or parking fee applies — at Baylands properties it often does.

Food is a separate line. Brisbane has few restaurants, so budget for driving or delivery. If you are comparing against San Francisco, remember that city hotels commonly charge US$50–80 a night for parking, which is where the Brisbane saving usually comes from.
