Boston in March: what to expect

March is Boston's transition month: winter has not let go, but the light is back. Expect grey, raw days with a cold wind off the harbour, a mix of rain and wet snow, and one or two bright, crisp days that hint at spring. Snow that falls usually melts within a day or two, but a late-season storm can still drop a foot of snow — the biggest snowfalls in Boston history have landed in February and March.

Daytime highs sit near 8 °C (46 °F) and nights hover around freezing, so a walk along the waterfront feels much colder than the number suggests. Daylight grows fast: roughly 11.5 hours on 1 March and 12.5 by the end of the month, and clocks move forward one hour on the second Sunday, which pushes sunset past 7pm.

March is one of the quietest months in Boston. The Freedom Trail, the Museum of Fine Arts and the North End are all walkable without queues, and you can often get a table without a reservation. Two exceptions: St Patrick's Day (17 March) fills the pubs and the South Boston parade route, and college spring breaks in the second half of the month bring families and student groups.

Hotel rates are at their lowest of the spring — expect roughly 30–40% less than a June or October weekend for the same room. Flights into Logan are also cheaper than in April or May. If you are flexible, midweek nights in the first half of March are the best value of the whole year in Boston.

The month's anchor event is St Patrick's Day on 17 March, with a parade in South Boston and a smaller one in the city centre; expect big crowds, road closures and packed bars from early afternoon. Evacuation Day falls on the same date and is a local holiday in Suffolk County.

The Boston Flower & Garden Show usually runs for five days in mid-March at the Seaport, a good indoor option on a wet day. The Boston Symphony Orchestra and the city's theatres are in full season, and college hockey and basketball tournaments fill the TD Garden and campus arenas. Restaurant Week-style promotions sometimes run in March — check the city's tourism site for dates.

Build the trip around indoor anchors and short outdoor walks. The Museum of Fine Arts, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, the Museum of Science and the New England Aquarium all work in bad weather. The Freedom Trail is fine on a dry day — 4 km, about two hours at a brisk pace — but the harbour islands and whale-watching boats do not start until later in spring.

For a half-day out, take the T to Harvard Square in Cambridge, or walk the Emerald Necklace parks if the paths are clear. The North End and Quincy Market are good for a warm lunch stop. If you want a day trip, Salem and Concord are reachable by train, but check schedules — some seasonal services do not run until April.

Think layers and waterproofing, not a winter coat. A waterproof shell over a warm mid-layer handles rain, wet snow and wind; add a hat, gloves and a scarf for the harbour wind. Shoes need grip — pavements can be icy in the morning and slushy by afternoon. Bring a small umbrella and a dry bag or cover for your phone and camera.

February is colder and snowier, with the same low prices and even fewer visitors. April brings the first warm days, the Marathon and higher hotel rates; May is the best spring month for walking, with the Public Garden in bloom. If your dates are fixed to March, plan for indoor time and treat any sunny day as a bonus.
