Boston in April: what to expect

April is Boston's transition month. The first half still feels like late winter: raw wind off the harbour, morning temperatures near 4–6 °C, and a real chance of a cold snap. By the last week you get genuine spring days, with afternoon highs near 16–18 °C and people sitting outside on Newbury Street.

Rain is the main planning issue. Expect roughly 11 wet days spread across the month, often as a single soaking system rather than all-day drizzle. Coastal fog and sea breezes keep the waterfront and the North End a degree or two cooler than inland neighbourhoods such as Cambridge and Jamaica Plain.

Snow in April is uncommon but not unknown in Boston, and a late storm can still drop a few centimetres. Pack for three seasons in one trip: a warm mid-layer, a windproof shell and shoes that handle wet pavement.

April sits in the shoulder between the winter lull and the May–June peak, so hotel rates and airfares are usually lower than in the two months that follow. The exception is Marathon weekend, when the city fills, downtown rooms sell out early and prices jump.

Midweek is noticeably quieter than weekends. Museums, the Freedom Trail and the harbour ferries are all manageable without timed tickets in April, unlike July and August. College visits and admitted-student events can also lift demand on specific dates — check the calendar before you fix your dates.

Restaurant reservations are easy at short notice except on marathon weekend and around Patriots' Day re-enactments in Lexington and Concord.

The month's anchor event is the Boston Marathon, run on the third Monday — Patriots' Day — from Hopkinton into Back Bay. Expect road closures along the route, packed T stations near Copley and Kenmore, and a city-wide holiday atmosphere.

Patriots' Day itself brings Revolutionary War re-enactments and parades in Lexington and Concord, about 30–40 minutes out by car or commuter rail. Fenway Park's home schedule usually starts in early April, and the Boston Red Sox play most of the month at home.

On the cultural side, the Boston area marks Patriots' Day with morning ceremonies, and late April often brings the first big outdoor markets and harbour events of the year. Exact dates shift annually — confirm before booking.

April is a walking month, and the Freedom Trail is far more comfortable now than in July. Start at Boston Common, where the grass and the first blossoms appear late in the month, then follow the red line through the North End, the waterfront and Charlestown.

The Public Garden's flower beds and the magnolias on Commonwealth Avenue Mall usually peak in the second half of April. The Charles River Esplanade is the local running and cycling path, and it is at its best on a dry afternoon.

For indoor days, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and the New England Aquarium all absorb a wet afternoon. Harvard Square and the Harvard Art Museums make a good half-day in Cambridge, reachable on the Red Line.

Day trips work well in April because the roads are clear and the coastal crowds are absent: Salem by commuter rail, Concord and Lexington by car, or Cape Cod if you accept that many seasonal businesses are still shut until May.

Layer for a 10 °C swing between morning and afternoon. A waterproof shell with a hood matters more than an umbrella in Boston's wind, and shoes with grip handle wet brick and cobblestone on the Freedom Trail.

Bring a warm mid-layer, a light scarf or buff for the harbour wind, and one smarter outfit if you have dinner or a game booked. Sunglasses and sunscreen are worth packing for the bright late-April afternoons.

March is colder and less predictable, with a higher chance of snow and fewer outdoor events. May is warmer and drier, with the Public Garden in full flower, but hotel prices and crowds climb. June is the start of the high season: warm, busy and expensive.

If your priority is weather, aim for late May or September. If your priority is price and you can accept a wet day or two, April is the better trade.
