Bom Jesus do Itabapoana
Half a day to one night: see the 1880 church and a waterfall, then move on. Not a base for the region.
Bom Jesus do Itabapoana is a small city in northwestern Rio de Janeiro state, near the border with Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais. Its main draw is the Igreja Matriz Senhor Bom Jesus (completed 1880) and several waterfalls (Cachoeirão, Fumaça, Inferno, Rosal) within a short drive. Most travellers pass through on the BR-101 or stop for a meal and a quick look. The city has basic services but no major sights that require more than a few hours.
