Biel/Bienne is Switzerland's bilingual watch city on the north-east shore of Lake Biel, 25–35 min by train from Bern and 15 min from Neuchâtel. The sights sit in a compact old town and along the lake, so it works as a short stop on the Jura–Bern rail line rather than a multi-day base. Watchmaking (Rolex, Omega, Swatch) and lake fish are the reasons to get off the train.

Get around
The centre is walkable: station to old town about 10 min, old town to lakefront about 15 min. Trams, buses and S-Bahn cover the edges; buy a ticket from the machine before boarding. Boats run on Lake Biel in season and along the Aare from Solothurn, with no Aare service in winter.
