About these names

Berlin's 12 boroughs (Bezirke) are large administrative units, not neighbourhoods; addresses and this guide use the older, smaller neighbourhood names (Kreuzberg, Mitte, Neukölln) that Berliners actually use.

Berlin is far larger and flatter than most European capitals: the historic centre (Mitte) holds most first-visit sights, but Kreuzberg, Friedrichshain, Neukölln and Prenzlauer Berg — all a short S-Bahn or U-Bahn ride away — hold most of the food, nightlife and street life that define the city today.

What to order and what locals pay, from each eat page. Prices are estimates; check the menu.

  • Burgermeister (Schlesisches Tor)

Cheap burgers from a former public toilet under the elevated U1 line: a casual lunch at the end of the wall walk; expect a queue at peak hours.

Order: Currywurst: Ask at a Currywurst stand instead if you want it.

Price: Same posted prices for everyone; a well-known cheap-eats spot among Berliners, not a tourist trap.

  • Curry 36

A classic Berlin currywurst stand: sliced sausage in curry ketchup with fries, eaten standing at a shelf; a five-minute detour on the way to or from the East Side Gallery.

Order: Currywurst: Say "Currywurst, mit Pommes" for the sausage and fries combo.

Price: Standard street-food prices, the same board for everyone.

  • Markthalle Neun

A restored 1891 market hall in Kreuzberg with permanent food stalls and a weekly Street Food Thursday event; a 15–20 minute walk or short ride from the East Side Gallery, best on a Thursday evening if the crowds do not put you off.

Order: Street Food Thursday: Walk the hall once to see the full lineup before committing to a queue.

Price: Same posted prices for everyone at each stall.

  • Mustafa's Gemüse Kebap

One of Berlin's best-known döner stands, at Mehringdamm in Kreuzberg — a detour from the East Side Gallery cluster (about 25–35 minutes by U-Bahn), and known for a long queue most of the day; worth it if you have the time, skip if you are short on it.

Order: Gemüse Kebap: Say "Gemüse Kebap, scharf" for spicy or leave off "scharf" for mild.

Price: Same posted prices for everyone; a well-known cheap-eats destination, not a tourist markup.
