Where to stay in Belfast: best neighborhoods and hotels

Belfast is a one-street town on the R33 in the Mpumalanga highlands, roughly 45–60 minutes south of Mbombela and on the road toward Dullstroom. It has no beachfront, no old quarter and no business district, so "which neighborhood" is the wrong question. The useful split is town versus farm.

Choose a town guesthouse if you arrive late, leave early, or want to walk to dinner. Choose a farm or country lodge if you are staying two nights or more, want silence, stars and a fireplace, or are using Belfast as a base for the highland passes and trout country. If you are here for Kruger, stay in Hazyview or Mbombela instead and treat Belfast as a scenic detour.

Distances are by road from the Belfast town centre and are approximate. Prices are 2026 estimates for a double room per night in high season; low-season rates often drop 20–30%.

The town is compact: a main road with a handful of guesthouses, a couple of cafés, a petrol station and a small supermarket. That is the appeal — you park once and walk. Rooms are typically converted houses with electric blankets, which matters because winter nights here drop close to freezing.

This is the right base for a single night on a self-drive between Gauteng and the lowveld, or for a late arrival after a long day. It is not the right base if you want a view, a pool or a fire under the stars; for that you drive out of town.

Within 30 minutes of Belfast the R33, R540 and R577 run through farmland, pine plantations and trout streams. Farm lodges here offer self-catering cottages, fireplaces, hiking and fly-fishing, usually with no restaurant, so plan food. This is where the area earns a second night.

Trade-offs: you need a car, gravel access roads can be rough in the summer rains (Nov–Mar), and phone signal is patchy. In exchange you get dark skies, birdlife and quiet that the town cannot offer.

Belfast is highland: at about 1,900 m, winter nights (Jun–Aug) fall below freezing and summer afternoons can bring thunderstorms. Pack layers regardless of the month.

Book ahead for the Apr–May and Sep–Oct shoulder seasons and for long weekends, when the Dullstroom–Belfast belt fills with Gauteng weekenders. Ask about load-shedding backup, since power cuts are routine in South Africa; a lodge with solar or a generator is worth paying for. Confirm whether your host offers dinner — many do not, and the nearest restaurant may be 20 minutes away.
