Where to eat in Belfast: local dishes, markets and neighborhoods

Belfast is a small coastal town, so the decision is less about which restaurant and more about which kind of meal you want. The table below sets out the main options with rough prices and how long to allow.

Belfast sits on Penobscot Bay in Waldo County, and its food is the standard coastal Maine menu: lobster in rolls or steamed whole, fried whole-belly clams, haddock, scallops, clam chowder and blueberry pie or cake in late summer. The lobster roll here is usually the cold, mayonnaise-dressed kind, served in a buttered split-top bun; some kitchens offer the warm butter version, so ask which one you are getting.

Downtown along Main Street and the blocks down to the harbour is where most of the choice sits: cafés and bakeries for breakfast and lunch, a few sit-down places for dinner, and seafood houses with water views. This is also where you eat if you are on foot or without a car.

Route 1, the highway that runs through the edge of town, is where the practical, cheaper food is: diners, breakfast places and takeaway seafood. If you are driving north or south along the coast, this is the easy stop.

For self-catering, the town has supermarkets and, in season, a farmers market with produce, bread, preserves and coffee. That is the cheapest way to eat well, especially if your accommodation has a kitchen.

Belfast is cheaper than Portland or Bar Harbor but not cheap in July and August, when demand is highest. A sit-down dinner with a main, a drink and tax lands around $30–50 per person before tip (2026 estimate). Lunch is the value meal: sandwiches, soups and chowder run $12–20.

Breakfast at a diner is the best budget option, typically $10–18 with coffee. Tipping is expected: 15–20% on the pre-tax total, more for good service. Sales tax in Maine is added on top of menu prices, so the number on the board is not what you pay.

Book weekend dinner in July and August; the town fills with summer visitors and the better waterfront tables go early. Many kitchens close one or two days a week, and several shut or cut hours from late autumn through spring, so check before you drive out.

If you want lobster without the restaurant price, buy cooked lobster or a roll from a takeaway stand and eat at a picnic table or on the harbour. Ask whether the price is market price, which changes daily.

Dietary needs are handled the way they are elsewhere in the US: menus often mark vegetarian and gluten-free items, and staff will usually check ingredients if you ask. Vegetarian choice is thinner in seafood houses and diners than in the downtown cafés.
