Beijing in May: what to expect

May is one of the best weather months in North China: the dust and haze of March and April ease, the air is usually clearer than in winter, and the first real heat of summer has not arrived. Expect mild mornings, warm afternoons and cool evenings, with a strong sun at midday and occasional windy days.

Rain is possible but rarely ruins a day; showers tend to pass quickly. The bigger variable is air quality, which improves on average in May but can still spike, so check a daily air-quality reading before planning a long outdoor day. Figures below are 2026 estimates — confirm against a forecast before you fly.

The month splits in two. From 1 to 5 May the national May Day holiday sends domestic travellers to Beijing in force: the Forbidden City, the Mutianyu and Badaling sections of the Great Wall, the Summer Palace and the hutongs around Houhai all run at capacity, and hotel rates peak. From about 6 May the holiday ends, schools are still in session, and the city becomes noticeably calmer while keeping the good weather.

Book train tickets and any timed-entry attraction as soon as your dates are fixed; popular sites release slots in advance and sell out on holiday days. Weekdays are quieter than weekends throughout the month.

The fixed point is the May Day holiday itself (1–5 May in most years), a national break rather than a Beijing-specific festival; its main effect on a traveller is transport and ticket demand. Beyond that, the city's calendar is dominated by exhibitions and performances rather than outdoor festivals, and dates shift year to year.

Check the programme for the National Centre for the Performing Arts and the major museums closer to your trip; spring exhibition seasons often open in May. Confirm any specific event locally rather than planning a trip around it.

May suits the classic first-trip circuit. The Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square and the Temple of Heaven are comfortable at this temperature, and the Great Wall at Mutianyu is at its best before summer heat and haze. The Summer Palace and the lakeside paths at Houhai are pleasant for a slow afternoon.

For a break from the centre, the 798 art district, the Lama Temple and the Confucius Temple area work well on a warm day, and the hutongs are easier to walk than in July or August. If you want a day trip, the Ming Tombs and the wall sections north of the city are the standard choices; book transport in advance during the holiday.

Pack for a wide daily range: light layers you can shed by midday and add again after sunset. A light jacket or thin windbreaker covers cool evenings and windy days. Comfortable walking shoes matter more than anything else, given the distances at the palace and wall sites.

Add sun protection — hat, sunglasses and sunscreen — because the May sun is strong even when the air is cool. A small umbrella or rain shell handles the occasional shower, and a mask is worth carrying if air quality turns poor on your dates.

April is cooler and can still be dusty, but it is quieter and cheaper than the May holiday window. June brings the start of summer heat and humidity along with the plum rain further south, so sightseeing days need earlier starts. If your dates are flexible, late April and the second half of May are the sweet spots around this period.
