BartlettBartlett, Tennessee

Skip as a base: Bartlett is a Memphis suburb with a small historic core. Come for a half-day, or sleep here if you want cheaper parking and a 25-min drive to Memphis.

Bartlett sits 20–25 minutes northeast of downtown Memphis on US 64 (Stage Road) and I-40. It grew from a stagecoach and railroad depot into a suburban city of about 60,000, and its draw is a compact Historic District with a local museum, a plantation site and a greenway trail. Almost everything else a visitor wants — Graceland, Beale Street, the Memphis museums — is in Memphis, so most travellers use Bartlett as a quiet, cheaper bed for a Memphis trip rather than as a destination of its own.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is the default: Bartlett is suburban, with wide boulevards and spread-out sights, and Memphis attractions are a 20–30 min drive. Rideshare works for evenings but is thin late at night. There is no useful rail or bus link from Bartlett to downtown Memphis for a visitor.

Small historic courthouse town; pair it with Jackson rather than making a separate trip.

Too far for a comfortable return day; sleep a night if you go.

Watch out

Safety

Bartlett is a low-crime suburban city and generally safe for visitors. The real risks are driving after a Memphis night out, summer heat on the trails, and leaving valuables visible in a parked car.
  • You need a car or rideshare; walking between sights is not realistic.
  • Summer heat and humidity peak in Jul–Aug — plan outdoor stops before 11:00.
  • Some historic buildings keep limited or seasonal hours: check before driving out.
  • Bartlett is dry of nightlife; Memphis is where the evening is.
