Barbados runs on the Barbados dollar, pegged at BBD 2 to US$1 since 1975, so prices in US dollars convert in your head instantly. That peg is also why US cash is accepted almost everywhere on the island — but you are usually handed change in Barbados dollars, and at the same 2:1 rate, so you lose nothing except convenience.
Card acceptance is good in the tourist economy. Hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, car rental firms, tour operators and larger shops take Visa and Mastercard. American Express turns up at hotels and some upmarket restaurants but is patchy elsewhere. Debit cards on the Visa and Mastercard networks work the same way as credit cards at the till.
