East Central, Bangalore: neighborhood guide

East Central is the British-built Cantonment core of Bangalore: Mahatma Gandhi Road, Brigade Road, the Brigade Grounds area and Ulsoor. It is the city's commercial and shopping heart, so expect offices, malls, cafés, bars and traffic rather than monuments.

The layout is easy to read. MG Road and Brigade Road run roughly parallel, joined by short cross streets full of shops and restaurants. Ulsoor Lake sits to the north-east, with a walkway and a temple nearby. Most of what a short-stay visitor wants is inside a 2 km walk or one or two metro stops.

This is a working district, not a sightseeing district. You come here to eat well, shop, sleep in a comfortable hotel and move around easily — not to tick off Bangalore's headline sights.

Stay here if your trip is two to three nights, you value restaurants and shopping within walking distance, and you want metro and app-cab access without changing hotels. It suits couples, solo travellers and business visitors, and it is the simplest base for a first visit to Bangalore.

Do not stay here if you want a quiet neighbourhood, a hostel bed under ₹1,000, or a base next to the botanical gardens and palace sights in the north of the city. Families with small children may prefer quieter streets; light sleepers should ask for a room away from the main road.

East Central is one of the easiest places in Bangalore to eat. The MG Road and Brigade Road blocks hold South Indian vegetarian kitchens, North Indian and Mughlai restaurants, Chinese and pan-Asian places, cafés and bars. Church Street, just off MG Road, is the densest strip for evening eating and drinking.

For a local breakfast, look for idli, dosa, vada and filter coffee at a busy vegetarian canteen; for lunch, a South Indian thali (meals) is the cheapest full plate. Biryani, kebabs and rolls are widely available. Most kitchens are vegetarian-friendly, and many are pure vegetarian, so ask before ordering meat.

Prices are 2026 estimates. A local breakfast or a plate of dosa is roughly ₹80–200; a thali ₹150–350; a mid-range restaurant dinner for two with drinks ₹1,500–3,000. Tipping of 5–10% is expected where no service charge is added.

The Purple Line metro runs through the area, with stations on and near MG Road; use it for the airport-side interchange and for cross-city trips, and check current line and station names before you travel. App cabs (Ola, Uber) and auto-rickshaws are the default for short hops; agree the fare or use the meter in autos, and expect surge pricing in the evening.

Kempegowda International Airport is roughly 35–40 km north of the district. Allow 60–90 minutes by road outside peak hours and considerably more in morning or evening traffic; the airport bus and metro-plus-bus options are cheaper than a cab (check current routes and fares).

Inside East Central, walking works for MG Road, Brigade Road and Church Street. Ulsoor Lake is a 20–30 minute walk or one short cab ride from MG Road. Traffic is heaviest roughly 08:30–10:30 and 17:30–20:00, so plan meals and transfers around it.
