Bajawa sits at about 1,200 m in the Ngadha highlands of central Flores, so nights are cool and the light is clear. It is a small town used as a base: traditional villages such as Bena, Gurusina and Tololela, the cone of Mount Inerie, hot springs and waterfalls are all within an hour by road. Two nights covers the core; three lets you climb Inerie or slow down. Roads in are long and bumpy, so most travellers arrive from Labuan Bajo, Ruteng or Ende and leave the same way.

There is no useful public transport for the sights. Rent a motorbike or charter a car or bemo for the day through your guesthouse; ask your host for current 2026 prices (check). Distances are short in kilometres but slow in minutes.

Watch out

Safety

Bajawa is a small, calm highland town and violent crime against visitors is rare. The real risks are scooter crashes on steep, unlit roads, cold nights at altitude, cash-only villages with no ATM, and unlicensed guides who inflate prices.
  • Altitude about 1,200 (≈ under US$1) m: nights are cold, bring a fleece or jacket.
  • No ATM near the villages — carry enough rupiah in cash for entry fees and weaving.
  • Unlicensed 'guides' in town overcharge; the official tourist information desk is at the mayor's office and sells nothing.
  • Roads from Labuan Bajo are long and bumpy; the drive takes about 7 hours by car.
  • Hot springs and waterfall paths are uneven and poorly maintained; wear shoes with grip.
