Where to stay in Bahamas: best areas and types of hotel

Nassau and Paradise Island are the safe default: flights, food, beaches and day trips in one place, with 3–4 nights enough to see it. If you have a second week, move to one Out Island rather than adding a third stop — inter-island flights are short but infrequent (check schedules), and connections eat days.

Choose by trip type: resorts and casinos on Paradise Island, guesthouses and boutique hotels in Nassau's historic centre, small family-run lodges and rental cottages on the Out Islands. Price bands below are 2026 estimates to check, not quotes.

Step 1 — decide how many islands. One base per trip is the rule that saves the most money and time. Nassau plus one Out Island is the standard shape and needs 7–9 nights (3–4 + 4–5); three islands in a week means most of it in airports and ferry terminals.

Step 2 — pick the island by what you will do daily. Beaches and restaurants within walking distance: Nassau or Paradise Island. Boat days to sandbars and cays: Exuma. Pink sand and near-empty coves: Eleuthera or Harbour Island. Sailing between small cays: Abaco. Diving, blue holes and bonefishing: Andros. Shortest hop from Florida: Grand Bahama.

Step 3 — pick the neighbourhood on New Providence. Downtown Nassau puts you near Junkanoo Beach, the straw market and restaurants, but it is busy and can be noisy. Cable Beach is a mid-range strip with a long beach and bus links. Paradise Island is resort-only, walkable within itself, and a short bridge or ferry ride from Nassau (check current ferry times).

Step 4 — pick the property type. Resorts bundle pools, kids' clubs and dining but charge resort fees and add gratuity. Guesthouses and small hotels in Nassau cost less and put you in local neighbourhoods. On the Out Islands, rental cottages and small lodges are often the only option, so book early and confirm whether a car is needed.

Step 5 — check the practical bits before paying. Confirm airport transfer time, whether the beach is swimmable in winter swells, whether a car is needed for groceries, and whether the rate includes taxes and gratuity. Hurricane season (June–November) rates are lower; buy travel insurance that covers weather disruption if you book then.

Inter-island flights are the main constraint on island-hopping: schedules are thin (check) and a missed connection can cost a day. Ferries exist on some routes but are slower and weather-dependent.

USD is widely accepted alongside the Bahamian dollar, which is pegged 1:1, so you rarely need to change money. Cards work at hotels and larger restaurants; small Out Island businesses may be cash-only (check).

Left-hand driving applies; if your cottage is away from a settlement, plan for a rental car. Plugs are US-style types A and B at 120 V, so US and Canadian devices need no adapter.
