How to build the trip
Start with Baku. Three or four nights covers Icherisheher (the walled Old City), the Maiden Tower, the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, the Heydar Aliyev Center, the Carpet Museum and the seaside boulevard. Walk the Old City in the morning and the boulevard at dusk when the Flame Towers light up.
Bolt on day trips before you leave the capital. Gobustan and the mud volcanoes take a full day; Ateshgah and Yanar Dag combine in a half day and work well after dark. Both are easiest with a driver or a small tour from Baku.
Then go to Sheki for one or two nights, stopping at Shamakhi and Lahic on the drive. The Khan's Palace and the caravanserai are the draw, and the town is the natural mountain base.
With ten days or more, add the north or the west: Quba as a base for Khinaliq, Ganja as the second city, or Gabala for mountains and lakes in summer. Lankaran in the south suits a slower second trip.
Land borders are closed, so plan exits by air (check). That makes Baku the practical start and end of most routes.

What to watch
Khinaliq is a summer place: the road and the village work best Jun–Sep, and it needs a night to be worth the drive. Lahic is a day trip or one night from Sheki or Baku.
Ganja is a one-night city on the way between Baku and the west; the train is the comfortable option. Gabala is a summer add-on, not a winter one.
Nakhchivan is an exclave reached by air from Baku; treat it as a separate trip rather than a stop on a road route.
Stay away from the Armenia border and former conflict areas unless your own government's advice and a local licensed guide say otherwise. Check current advice before any route near the frontier.
Distances are long and mountain roads are slow; a driver is usually cheaper than a missed connection. Carry cash for small towns.
