Which length fits you
Auckland is spread out and the good parts are not all downtown. One day is a taster, two days is a fair look at the city, three days lets you leave it. If you are flying out to Queenstown or driving to Rotorua, two nights is enough; if Auckland is your only North Island stop, take three.

The itineraries
Day 1 stays central and needs no car. Start on the waterfront at Viaduct Harbour and the Wynyard Quarter, walk or take a short bus to the Domain and Auckland Museum for the Māori and Pacific collections, then finish on Mount Eden or One Tree Hill for the view. Devonport, a short ferry across the harbour, is a gentler alternative to a volcanic cone and works well in the afternoon.
Day 2 is the day trip. Waiheke Island for vineyards and beaches, or a west-coast beach if you have a car. Piha and Muriwai are surf beaches with black sand and gannet colonies; both are about an hour's drive from the centre and the roads are winding. Without a car, Waiheke or Devonport is the better choice.
Day 3, if you have it, is the other west beach, a longer Waiheke day, or a slow morning in Ponsonby and Parnell before an afternoon flight. Do not schedule a day trip on your departure day; Auckland traffic makes the airport run unpredictable.
