The detail
The AirportLink service runs between the domestic and international terminals and the city, with stops around Queen Street and the Britomart area. Buses are frequent through the day but thin late at night, so check the last departure before you rely on it. You pay with an AT HOP card or a contactless card; a paper ticket costs more. Luggage space is limited at busy times.
Shuttles are booked ahead or at the terminal desk and take you to your address rather than a stop. They are the middle option: cheaper than a taxi for one or two people, slower than a taxi because of the other pickups.
Taxis wait at ranks outside both terminals. Uber and other rideshares pick up from a signed area — follow the app's instructions rather than the taxi rank. Fares vary with demand, and surge pricing at peak arrival banks can push a rideshare above a metered taxi.
If you are collecting a rental car, the major firms have desks at the airport and shuttles to off-site depots. Driving into the city means motorway traffic and paid parking; many travellers pick the car up on the way out of Auckland instead.

Tips
Land before 15:00 on a weekday and the road into the city is usually manageable; land at 17:30 and the same trip can take an hour. If your flight arrives in the evening rush, the bus is less affected by traffic than a car because of its lane and route, but it is also fuller.
The city centre is compact and walkable once you arrive, so you rarely need a car for the first day or two. Pick up a rental when you leave for the rest of the North Island or the South Island.
If you are heading straight out — to Piha, Muriwai or further south — compare an airport pickup against a city pickup; airport depots often charge a premium and the drive out of the city is the same either way.
