Athens in October: what to expect

Athens in October is a shoulder-season month: warm, mostly dry and comfortable for walking between ruins. Expect daytime highs near 23 °C early in the month, dropping to around 20 °C by the end, with nights from about 17 °C down to 13 °C. The sea in Attica is still around 23 °C at the start of the month, which is warm enough for a swim at Vouliagmeni or along the Attica coast.

Rain builds as the month goes on. The first half is usually dry and sunny; the second half brings the first autumn fronts, with roughly five or six wet days across the month. Sunlight drops from about eight hours a day to six by the end, so plan outdoor sights for the morning and keep museums as a wet-afternoon fallback.

Air quality and heat are rarely a problem now, unlike July and August, when Athens regularly passes 35 °C and heatwaves push past 40 °C. October is the month when you can climb Lykavittos or walk the Acropolis hill in the middle of the day without suffering.

October is the first quiet month of the Athens season. The Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum still draw people, but queues are a fraction of the July–August lines and you can often walk up mid-morning without a timed-entry problem. Hotel rates fall from the summer peak while staying above the November–February low, so October sits in the middle band: cheaper than September, more expensive than winter.

Ferries to the islands keep running, but schedules thin out and some Cyclades hotels, tavernas and boat trips close after mid-month. If island-hopping is part of the plan, go in the first two weeks. If Athens is the whole trip, any week works, and the second half is quieter still.

Athens returns to its own rhythm in October: the concert and theatre season restarts, galleries open new shows, and the city fills with students rather than tour groups. The Athens Marathon and its shorter races are usually run in early November, so late October is the final stretch of training season on the city's streets.

Two national dates frame the month. 28 October, Ohi Day, is a public holiday with school and military parades in Athens and across Greece; shops and some museums run reduced hours, so check before you plan a museum day. 26 October is the feast of Agios Dimitrios, a name day widely celebrated in Greece, which means busy tavernas and family gatherings rather than a tourist event.

October suits the classic Athens sights. The Acropolis, the Ancient Agora and the Temple of Olympian Zeus are all comfortable in the milder heat, and the National Archaeological Museum is a good wet-day option. Walk the coastal tram route to the Attica beaches while the sea is still warm, and take a half-day trip to Cape Sounion for the temple at sunset — the light in October is low and long.

For a longer trip, the Peloponnese is at its best now: Nafplio, Mycenae and Epidavros are cooler and quieter than in summer. Crete and Rhodes hold their warmth longest, with sea temperatures still pleasant into late October, while the Cyclades wind down fast after mid-month. Northern Greece and Meteora are also comfortable, though rain arrives earlier there.

Pack for a warm day and a cool evening: light layers, a light jacket or sweater for nights, and comfortable walking shoes for the marble and cobbles around the Acropolis, Plaka and Anafiotika. Bring a compact umbrella or rain shell for the second half of the month, and sun protection — the October sun is weaker than in summer but still strong at midday.

A swimsuit is worth the space if you are here in the first two weeks, especially for the Attica coast or a side trip to an island. A refillable water bottle helps in a city where tap water is safe to drink.

September is warmer and busier, with the sea at its best and island ferries still on a full timetable. November is quieter and cheaper but noticeably wetter, and the islands are largely shut — good for museums, not for island-hopping. August is the month to avoid if you dislike heat and crowds: Athens is hot, expensive and packed.
